How to Host the Ultimate Baby Shower
Make an expectant friend feel cherished – celebrate their upcoming new arrival in style with games, food, gifts and a little practical help too.
Show your excitement and support for the parents-to-be with a baby shower filled with love. This joyful get-together is not just fun, but also an opportunity to help prepare for the baby’s arrival with gifts and advice. Make the party look extra special with tableware and baby shower decorations in pretty pastels, florals or a niche theme you know they’ll love.
Get the look
Firstly, choose an aesthetic. Traditional baby shower choices include baby animals, teddy bears and Peter Rabbit (check out our wonderful Peter Rabbit range), or go for classic Peter Rabbit range), or go for classic pink and blue, or yellow, mint or white for a gender-neutral theme. Garlands and giant honeycomb decorations help set the scene, while decorative cups, plates and napkins will complete the look. Add in a few table candles for a warm, welcoming feel.
Fun food ideas
Finger foods will work well at a baby shower as the theme is, after all, about little things! So mini sandwiches, mini quiches and mini fruit tarts are perfect.
Themed desserts, like small rattle shaped cookies, will add a fun touch too. It’s a good idea to set up two food tables, one with savoury food and one with sweet, and let your guests help themselves. Use cake stands, or make stands using overturned bowls covered in paper napkins, to add height so that different dishes are not only more eye-catching but also easier to reach.
Playful games and thoughtful gestures
• Name the baby. Get your guests to each bring a baby photograph of themselves, pin them on a board and play the ‘name the baby’ guessing game.
• Baby animal names. Here’s a chance to test your guests’ knowledge of the animal kingdom, specifically animal baby names. Include 10-20 names, with some unusual ones like a duck-billed platypus (puggle), beaver (kit) and crocodile (hatchling). Give a prize to the guest with the highest score.
• Bring a special storybook. Choose a beautiful edition – perhaps a hardcover or a vintage first edition – of your favourite childhood book and write a heartfelt message to the baby inside the cover. This heartfelt gift will become a cherished keepsake, building the baby’s library with stories from day one.
• Encourage guests to bring something homemade, whether it’s a knitted blanket, hand-painted card, hand-tied bouquet, or a batch of cookies. The expecting parents will be truly touched by personal, lovingly made gifts!
• Buy a memory book and ask guest to write a note to the baby-to-be with memories and photos of the parents. It will be a fun keepsake as they grow older.
Practical gifts and help
For such small creatures babies sure do need a lot of things! Nappies, clothes, essentials like bottle warmers and toys will therefore be most welcome gifts from family members and friends. Check out our beautiful organic cotton baby booties and bonnets and toys.
You could also give a baby shower a ‘nesting party’ angle, by helping the new parents to get baby-ready. Bring your power tools to the party if they need help assembling the nursery furniture. Get those who love to cook to bring containers filled with healthy energising meals to stock the freezer to help the new parents look after themselves. The more prepared the parents feel, the more their confidence for this new chapter of their life will soar!
Wisdom and advice
Impending parenthood can be a scary time, there’s so much to learn! So, a baby shower is a great chance for experienced parents to share tips, stories, and advice to help the parents-to-be navigate parenthood. You could turn advice sharing into a party game too, like ‘Name the 10 top ways to help ease colic’. Or, why not get all the party guests to write down their top suggestions on cards or in a binder, for helpful information to access once the baby is born and in the months to come?
